Susan Nichols, of the Arlington Board of Cultural Affairs, presented the award to Firebelly's Artisitc Director, Kathi Gollwitzer and Producer, Barbara Walthall. She explained that Firebelly Productions, the first recepient of this award, was recognized because of its tremendous achievement in its theatrical productions for such a young company.

"If its recent outstanding productions of 'Lend Me a Tenor,' 'Of Mice and Men,' and 'Butterflies Are Free' are any indication, Firebelly Productions is well on its way," Nichols said.

Kathi Gollwitzer, upon accepting the "Bright New Star Award," said, "This award truly belongs to the young adult actors and technicians whose hard work, dedication, and passion have made Firebelly Productions a success."

"It is a joy to work alongside these young people.  It never seems like 'work'."

Several of the young adult artists who have worked with Firebelly over the past year were on stage during the acceptance of the award.

"This award is our heart, it's what we love to do, all placed into a little glass trophy," remarked David Cahill, an actor and Multimedia Director for Firebelly.

"To work with a company that dares to devote itself to giving young actors a forum to develop and succeed, and for that company to be rewarded for that risk, is just fantastic," he said.

Each year, the Arlington Commission for the Arts gives its "Star Awards" to those individuals, artists and arts groups who have achieved a superior level of excellence in the arts.  Awards are also given to businesses and groups who have, through support and donations, made Arlington County's growing arts program possible.
