A man and a woman - maybe they're a couple, maybe not - wake up in a strange vacation house, not knowing who they are, where they are or what their relationship to each other might be.

Then a quirky and slightly creepy young woman, who may or may not be their daughter, starts spinning stories about their past. Are they murderers? Victims of foul play? Part of a diabolical experiment?

Firebelly Productions wraps up its 2007-08 season with “A Body of Water,” which follows the couple as they try to figure out what is going on, combining both drama and humor in the process.

The show will please those who enjoy taking a ride without caring much about the destination, as the two-act production raises as many questions as it answers.

John Collins and Patricia Foreman, who starred together in Firebelly's production of “A Long Day's Journey Into Night” earlier in the season, here are cast as Moss and Avis, the (maybe) husband and wife duo that can remember only flashes of their separate pasts.

Tori Miller plays Wren, the slightly surreal daughter (again, maybe, maybe not) who apparently has to explain everything to the couple again and again as each new day dawns.

The script, by Lee Blessing, needs some tightening up and might well work better as a somewhat condensed single-act show. Director Michael Ryan Fernandez does keep the pacing moving, and the three actors manage to imbue their characters with nuances.

As noted above, those who like to amble through theater, without expecting a tidy little package at the end, will find this one interesting. A solid end to the season.

“A Body of Water” runs through July 20 at Theatre-on-the-Run, 3700 South Four Mile Run Drive in Arlington. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, July 19.
